POSITION:              FLEET MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR  
DEPARTMENT:       PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT  
STATUS:                 EXEMPT / SAFETY SENSITIVE 
REPORTS TO:        PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE DEPUTY 
SHIFT:                     FT REGULAR– 40 HOURS PER WEEK 
SALARY:                MINIMUM $48,315 – MAXIMUM $73,034 ANNUALLY DOQ

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor manages daily operations of the City’s mechanic shop servicing the
municipal fleet, including Police, Fire, Public Works, Parks, Utilities, and specialty equipment. This role
ensures safe, compliant, and cost-effective maintenance and repair programs; oversees staff scheduling and
performance; manages parts and inventory; and drives preventive maintenance and reliability initiatives that
maximize fleet uptime and public service readiness. 

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Although the following are typical of the tasks and responsibilities routinely performed, additional tasks and
/or responsibilities requiring comparable or skills, knowledge, or dexterity may be assigned. 
  1. Safe, efficient, and effective maintenance of city vehicles, small engines, and equipment.
  2. Plan, assign, and supervise the work of mechanics and shop personnel; set priorities for inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance (PM).
  3. Ensure timely support for critical operations including after-hours emergencies when needed.
  4. Maintain and enforce shop safety practices and compliance with OSHA and City policies.
  5. Oversee inspections, diagnostics, and repairs of light/heavy-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, small engines, and specialized public safety apparatus.
  6. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  7. Maintain PM schedules, inspection records, work orders, warranties, recalls, and certification documentation.
  8. Develop and manage the fleet maintenance budget; monitor labor, parts, fuel, fluids, tools, outside services, and capital tool needs.
  9. Source parts and services; obtain quotes/bids per City procurement policy; manage vendor relationships.
  10. Maintain parts room, tooling, diagnostic equipment, and shop asset inventory.
  11. Use the City’s fleet management system to track work orders, PM compliance, downtime, and lifecycle costs.
  12. Produce monthly and annual reports with recommendations.
  13. Recommend vehicle/equipment specifications and lifecycle replacement schedules.
  14. Recruit, train, coach, and evaluate staff.
  15. Promote a safety-first, customer service–oriented culture.
  16. Serve as the liaison to operating departments; communicate status and priorities.
  17. Coordinate vehicle commissioning/decommissioning. 
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
  1. High school graduate or equivalent desired.
  2. ASE certification preferred, but not required. 
  3. Ability to operate various manual and/or motor driven tools.
  4. Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  5. Show aptitude for safe operation of assigned automotive equipment. 
  6. Must follow instructions, procedures and City safety rules and regulations.
  7. Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.  
  8. Previous work experience on diesel engines preferred.
  9. Five years of fleet/mechanic experience including two+ years of supervision.
  10. Diagnostic and repair knowledge across gas, diesel, and heavy equipment.
  11. Valid NM driver’s license; CDL B preferred.
  12. Knowledge of engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics.
  13. Proficiency with fleet management software.
  14. Strong communication, budgeting, scheduling, and leadership skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
  1.  Ability to maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time, driving, or riding in vehicles or equipment.
  2. Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds.
  3. Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds frequently, from ground to waist level, or from ground to shoulder level. 
  4. Ability to squat, bend, twist, climb, and kneel for up to 4 hours as a time, and up to eight hours per day. 
  5. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, squat, crouch, and crawl and work in confine spaces.
  6. Noise level could be moderate to loud in work environment.
  7. Ability to drive, occasional long distances.
  8. Work with machinery.
  9. Must possess ability to adapt to inclement weather conditions and/or situations.
  10. May be exposed to dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment.
  11. Must be able to climb in and out of equipment cabs, and crawl about heavy equipment, as needed.
  12. Worker is exposed to diesel fumes, as well as fumes from carbon, gasoline, and acetylene gas.
  13. Work may be performed on an even or uneven surface, which may be wet or dry.  Work may be performed on inclines, working surface may be flat and hard, asphalt or concrete.  Surface may be slick or greasy. 
  14. Work hazards, or potential work hazards, include working around hot engines, using air guns, working with, and lifting large equipment and parts and working with various solvents.
WORK SCHEDULE:
The regular work week is 40 hours – Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., one hour off for lunch. 
Additional time may be required to work after regular hours, on weekends, and holidays.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Limited travel – ability to travel for meetings and training may be required.
  2. Overnight travel may be required.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must pass a background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary.
  2. Must pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier. 
  2. Random drug and alcohol testing is a condition of employment and will be tested under the authority of the Department of Transportation.
