Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a Pharmacology Research Scientist to join our pain pharmacology group in San Diego. We are looking for a motivated creative and innovative scientist with a deep understanding of ion channel physiology and pharmacology and expertise in pain research. This lab-based role involves designing mechanistic studies developing cellular models of neuronal function and analyzing data to guide decision-making. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience using cutting edge electrophysiological and imaging techniques utilizing primary cells including human cells. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong desire to collaborate within a multidisciplinary drug discovery team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design and execute pharmacology studies focused on ion channel modulation.
• Develop cellular models to study neuronal excitation action potential propagation and neurotransmitter release.
• Analyze interpret and communicate pharmacological data to project teams.
• Collaborate with technology teams to integrate advanced tools into workflows.
• Ensure high standards of scientific documentation and communication.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Strong understanding of ion channel pharmacology.
• Experience with assays related to neuronal signaling and excitability.
• Experience with electrophysiological and imaging techniques utilizing primary cells including human cells
• Proven ability to design execute and interpret cellular assays.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to navigate and thrive in a fast-paced highly-matrixed work environment.
• Passion for innovative solutions that improve lives.

Education and Experience:

• PhD and 0-3 years of experience or
• Masters degree and 3 years of experience or
• Bachelors degree and 6 years of experience

Pay Range:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors including skills competencies experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
